Lionel Messi leads incredible Argentina comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure last-eight place: As it happened!

Argentina launched an amazing late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 on Tuesday (7 July) to take their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Egypt looked on course for a last-eight slot after taking a 2-0 lead in the second half but Argentina fought back with just 11 minutes remaining, scoring three goals in dramatic fashion to the delight of their adoring fans, including a record-extending 21st FIFA World Cup finals goal from Lionel Messi, who had earlier missed from the penalty spot.

This was the third encounter between these two nations and the first on this stage. Argentina won both of those games, the first an Olympic semi-final at Amsterdam 1928, and the second a friendly in 2008.

Catch up on all the action below from Argentina versus Egypt in the World Cup round of 16.
